The Davis Enterprise Endorses John Ferrera for Yolo County SupervisorVoters in the 4th Supervisorial District – North, East and South Davis and El Macero – will say farewell to their elected representative, Mariko Yamada, this year, and elect her successor. We recommend John Ferrera for the seat. Ferrera is a relative newcomer to Davis, having lived here but nine years. However, he has plunged into local volunteerism and has the community’s core values at heart. Couple that commitment to public service with his considerable professional background in public policy, and he’s a strong choice to help guide Yolo County in the coming years. Budget challenges will be paramount as California – and, by extension, its 58 counties – learns to live within its means. Ferrera’s experience as chief of staff to state Sen. Denise Ducheny, chairwoman of the Senate Budget Committee, gives him keen insight into the challenges Yolo County faces as it tightens its belt to the tune of $12 million. Ferrera says Yolo County can do much more to build local agricultural economy. He laments the loss of ag processing opportunities in Yolo, including the recent losses of landscaping, grain and seed operations that have left the county. Agri-tourism and partnerships with UC Davis are high on his to-do list. He’s pledged to help repair inter-agency relationships, believing Davis and the county can be better neighbors, and he promises to lead all parties in working together toward well-understood, collective goals. Ferrera’s background in transportation, affordable housing and economic development at the state and federal levels will serve him well as he tackles issues in Yolo County. He has the smarts and the heart to serve us well, too. |
